I LOVE Thrift Stores!

thrift 018                       Ok, so I know the subject of de-cluttering is getting really old for a lot of you, and I know you would rather read about what I have been sewing. I want to thank you for hanging in there with me, and still reading my blog to see what I have been up to, even though I have NOT been sewing.

I am still de-cluttering, in between working, taking my ‘junk’ to Goodwill, and looking for more ‘good junk’. I’m not done yet. I’m going to be at it for awhile.

I told Louie last week that I would like to find a more comfortable chair to put in the downstairs living area. Last weekend, after we delivered a big load of ‘stuff’ to one particular thrift store, we walked inside to look around (Come on! Quit laughing! You KNOW you have to look, just in case there is something you can’t live without!) Sitting there, was this VERY NICE Lane rocker recliner for a short person (you know, like Me!) We paid $100 for it. I looked on the internet, and the prices I found for the very same chair was between $450 and $600! SCORE!!!!! I love it, it is comfortable, and I think God put it there just for me.  I believe with all my heart, that when you give to others, your gifts are returned….in our case, almost immediately. You just can’t out-give God!  The bible even says so!

Luke 6:38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."thrift 005 thrift 006 The color is kind of a light sage green. Almost beige, but green. I love the wooden arms.               thrift 008                               That was LAST weekend. (Sorry I have been too tired to show you.)

Yesterday (Friday), after I worked until noon, I tore into my bedroom and worked at de-cluttering, and rearranging all afternoon. I had another load of ‘stuff’ that needed to be dropped off at Goodwill today. We loaded up the van (and we moved to ‘Beverly’…Oh, I mean) and we headed for the QC’s for a day of junkin’. When we were just about done for the day (we only had two more stops left), we went to the Disabled American Veteran’s thrift store (where we got my other two dressers) and we found another one! I have been looking for a couple weeks for one to put in my office to do more organizing. I have a couple wooden two drawer file cabinets that I was just using for storing ‘stuff’ and I wanted to get another nice dresser to replace them.  I found a vintage Sterling House Furniture solid Maple and (or?) Cherry dresser! It is very heavy and well built.thrift 013 thrift 016                                        Oh….it was NOT pretty. I regret that I did not take a couple photos when it had the old hardware on it. We actually stopped at Menards and bought new hardware for it. It needed my ‘magic touch’, and I knew I could make it look a lot better. I put new ‘feet’ on it, so my wooden floor would not get scratched. Here is a picture of one end of it before the Old English.                 thrift 010                                                       …and after.thrift 011                                                       I think it turned out pretty good, don’t you?  I am MORE than thrilled.thrift 014 thrift 015                                                      I also found a couple of ‘new to me’ Isabel Bloom’s. I don’t know this ducky’s name, or what the catalog name is, because I think he is retired, but I thought he was cute enough, that I let him follow me home.thrift 017 thrift 018                                       Then, I found another ‘Bloom’ at the DAV thrift store. This one is still current and has only been out for a couple years. I paid about half of retail, so again, SCORE! It is in perfect condition. This one is called Love One Another.                        thrift 019 thrift 020

So, that’s what I have been doing. Moving stuff in, and moving stuff out. Thanks for stopping by! Hope you are having a wonderful weekend.

Be blessed!                                   Michelle

  11. Hi Michelle! You must feel so much lighter after all the de-cluttering you've been doing. :) You are so much like me lol. My husband calls me the "flash". haha

I love the chair that you found. It is so nice. I checked my state to see if we had a DAV thrift store but we don't. Guess I have to come where you are to find some "good stuff". :)

It still amazes me how beautiful your dresser came out after you Old Englished it. I have yet to try to cover as many scratches as you have. Just beautiful!

I think your little duck is sooo cute! I surely would of let him follow me home too. LOL

  12. Thank you for Praising the LORD for blessing you with the chair..which I also love its' wooden open arms! He is good! I also loved your dresser. I think it is good to switch things around and out at times because it keeps us motivated and interested in our stuff and house. Know what I mean. I have been thrifting with my DD2, who sells lots of what she buys on the internet. She makes a little stash with it. I buy sewing stuff and love it. I will also buy tea pots if I find them.

  13. Hi again Michelle! What a great help you've been to me! Thank you and I hope this works!!! To answer your question, I go to a Catholic Charity Thrift Store that is wonderful and in a very old part of the city and is run by some very old and sweet Catholic ladies. They almost give stuff away and they sell a lot! The other places are a Thrift store that has 50% off sales regularly and the best place is a Good Will that you pay by the pound. So you can see that 5 cents for some of that stuff might be too high an estimate! They sell $1.50 a pound. I can get lots of fabric pieces or thread and buttoms or lace for next to nothing! :) This Good Will is the last place stuff goes before they throw it out, and I don't think they have to throw much out. Let me know if this works!
