Singer Merritt 2404

This machine certainly snuck up on me and was a complete surprise. I probably would have never bought this machine, but IT WAS PINK! The reason I wouldn’t have bought it, is that it has nylon gears. I run shy away from machines with non-metal gears. They don’t last like the metal ones do, and I don’t have the 'know-how' to replace gears.  But IT WAS PINK, so I had to have it.

The front panel shows all the stitches this machine CAN make, but you have to have Stylist Fashion Discs for that. This machine only had the zig zag disc in it, with no manual, discs, or accessories of any kind.

When I have a question, who do I email? Why Jim, of course! He knew exactly which fashion discs I needed, and he even had some to sell me. Not all 29, but 14 of them! What a guy! I received the fashion discs in the mail today. Thanks Jim! I also asked him if he knew when this machine was new. He told me he left Singer in 1982 and had not sold this machine yet at that time, so he believes this machine to be sold between then, and 1990.

See this Singer manual? I found where someone offered to send a pdf of this manual if anyone needed one, so I emailed her, and she sent me one! Thanks Deana!

Update: The manual for this machine is now on the Singer site. If you look on my sidebar, and click the photo of the Singer Merritt, it will take you to the pdf manual for download. Otherwise, go to Singer.com, click manuals, and put the number 2404 in, and the manual will be found there.

I think someone ‘played’ with this machine, trying to ‘fix it’ and gave up on it. Let’s see. The pressure foot all but fell off, the needle was in backwards, and when I tried to sew with it, the bobbin thread kept wrapping itself around the bobbin works. It had me confused for a little bit,Confused smile but then I figured it out, corrected the issue, and now she sews just fine.
Hmmm…now where am I going to put THIS one???
Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

I have had a LOT Of questions, and requests for a manual for this machine. Most recently, and not for the first time, people have asked me what does the knob with the numbers do that is on the top left? The manual does not show that knob, but it is the adjustment knob for the presser foot pressure. The pressure adjusts from 0 (lightest pressure) to 8 (tightest pressure). Mine is set on number 4, right in the middle.

  2. Hi Michelle, I don't think it is possible to resist adding a lovely pink sewing machine to your collection. Are you sure it is a late 80s model? Given the pink colour, plus cams I'd be guessing it is more like late 60s, early 70s. Regardless, it is a beautiful machine. I'm delighted for you.

  3. That is pink! Cute. Still looking for a purple machine. By the time I find one, she'll like another color. Lane

  7. I read this post on Thursday, before I left on my trip. While I was gone, I went into an antique store and what did I find, way in the back, dirty as all get out? This exact machine. I had to leave it there because I was bringing home my Mom's machine, but you know it crossed my mind to take this one as well. I think the price was something like $30 and I know I could have talked them down. Lane

  8. I found this in searching about the rolled hem foot for my Singer Merritt 2404 - wanted to let you know something - the machine as made in 1985/86 and sold at that time too - it stopped being sold in 1987 - source? my Grandma who purchased the machine I currently own brand new - she'd always tell me it was her "grandma gift" as it was shortly after I was born that she purchased it...now off to find out more about attaching the rolled hem foot...

The downside is that it didn't come with any of the discs except the zig-zag one and no manual:( I was wondering if you could send me the PDF manual that was sent to you? I would greatly appreciate it:) also if you know where I could buy the fashion discs? Thanks so much for posting about this machine not a lot of info on this model

  19. I just found this machine in nearby craigslist and just emailed the seller. Like you, I had the same reaction. Pink! It's not old enough to be all metal, but PINK! So I searched the web to see what I could find about this machine and it led me to your blog, and found that you have this machine. Do you still have yours? The one I'm trying to buy, according to the seller, has some tension problems. I hope it's an easy fix for me, and I hope she still has it to sell to me.

  20. Wow, just purchased a 2404 singer at a sale for $20. Brought it home and went through it before I plugged her in. She has been oiled and found a small amount of fuzz in the bottom. Well anyway it had the manual and all the cams, even the original needles, minus the broken one in the machine, the foot was not clicked into place; I can only imagine they started to sew and broke a needle to put up for another day. One of the bobbins had some white thread. So, I was looking for the age of this beautiful pink machine ; ) I am happy for my purchase either way. She works wonderfully.

  21. I was recently given this machine. It includes all the original parts (as far as I can tell) including the manual and all 29 disks. It appears to be in good working order. Any idea how much it might be worth?

  22. I have this machine as well, I picked it up at a thrift store for $15 with all the original accessories. One question that I can't figure out, please forgive my ignorance, is the top dial on the left of the machine. What does it do? I found the original manual at singer's website but the diagram does not show that dial. It's been over 20 years since I've had a machine or even sewn for that matter. Have a great day!

  23. Hi! My grandmother loved and left me this sewing machine when she passed away. I am just learning how to sew. I saw that you are willing to email the manual. I would LOVE if you could do that!

    Thank you SO much!

  25. Very pretty machine. I bought one at a yard sale for $10, it runs like a champ, but I don't have a manual. I seem to have a problem downloading the manual for it from your site. Would it be possible for you to send me a PDF to: imchuchesv@yahoo.com. I don't know what a blog profile is though.

    Thanks

    Carmen

  27. I downloaded the Merritt 2404 manual and par for the course Singer does not even mention the dial on the top of the machine near the left side numbered 0 thru 8. What is its function and proper setting? Anyone have any Idea. This was my mothers machine I inherited. I was sewing on it since the 80s. She always set it up but now I'm on my own. God I miss you mom.. Help...

  28. Does anyone know what the dial on the top of the machine toward the left side. It is numbered 0 thru 8. What is its function and correct setting? The manual makes absolutely NO MENTION of it. Thank you Singer...

  34. Thank you so much for writing about this pink machine! I found one this past week for $25, but it only came with one disk for the straight stitch. It doesn't have a presser foot, but I can get one of those pretty easily!
Thanks also for posting a link to the manual.
    Happy Stitchin'!

  35. I love my Merrit, I just wish it came with more cams. It came into my life pretty bare bones with just a blind stitch cam. And that's probably because it was already inside it.

  36. Do you know how to adjust the speed on this machine? Mine only sews at lightening fast speed. I can't get it to go slower no matter how I tweak it or press the pedal.

  37. I'm guessing that your foot controller is faulty. Try a different foot controller.

    1. I did. I can't find replacements that fit the machine. So I had to connect straight to the motor.

  38. I have the Singer Merritt Model 2404. I was delighted to find this site! Purchased it a long, long, time ago back in the '80's. Recently, I have found an interest in quilting. Wondered if this machine was capable of quilting. Was pleasantly surprised that it was capable of quilting. But, I really need a "Walking Foot" to really quilt the way I want to. A bit confused as to the using of Disc 6. I have all the disks that came with machine and the original manual. If someone could clarify this for me I would greatly appreciate it. Also, if you know where I can purchase the walking foot for this machine. Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  39. The walking foot is just a low shank walking foot,so any low shank walking foot should work.

I'm not sure which one is disk 6, but I'm sure it is just a decorative stitch, which back in the 80's was called an embroidery stitch.

  40. I have this charming pink machine and have since I was fourteen. I received it new for Christmas in 1982 I believe. I still use this machine continuously and have never had gear issues or any issues for that matter. I am more nervous about buying a newer fancier machine, than I am about sewing with this doll. We have traveled a lot of years and alot of miles together. I need to find replacement stitching discs as someone had borrowed my machine and lost those. With the quilting that I do, I would to have those back! I hope you have enjoyed yours as I have mine!
If all else fails to those looking for walking feet, Amazon always has them!

  41. I have this sewing machine I bought in 1986. I have alk the discs and accessories, except I broke one needle. I bought it when I was newly married. I had to buy it mail order with a payment plan and through earning points through somehow, but I can't remember. I can't remember how much it cost new back then. Does anyone know? I'm curious because it was such a difficult purchase for us back then.

  42. Hi, my mother bought my singer Merritt 2404 back in about 1980 and it was complete; instruction manual, stitch disks, accessories box, carry case, etc...along the way of life, I was moving back to California from Georgia, my machine was in the back of the truck but my sewing box was in the trailer, trailer was stolen..all my accessories, manual, stitch disks, were in the sewing box. I enjoy my Merritt 2404 sewing machine but I have only 5 disks...any idea where I can get replacement disks for this machine?
