They’re Baaaaack!!!

cicada_killer

Our annual visitors are back. Our visitors are called Cicada Killer Wasps, or Sphecius speciosus. (Can you pronounce that? I can’t!)

As usual, they have dug into the yard in several places along the driveway. (Can you see how dry our grass is?)

Louie is doing his part this year to reduce the number of them, and having fun doing it. Nothing else we have tried has helped.

They seem to be the slowest early in the morning, and right before sunset. The coin laying on the driveway next to the wasp is a quarter, to show you how big they are.

  1. I can only hope they'll leave so very soon! WTG to Louie for doing his part trying to get rid of them.

  2. LOL We used to have large wood-boring bees that liked our privacy fence in the backyard. When my father-in-law visited, he would amuse himself by swinging a baseball bat as they flew by. He eliminated quite a number that way.

I'm a little torn at applauding the demise of even a single creature who has "Cicada Killer" in its name. The cicada's were extremely populous this year...and extremely LOUD! I don't remember them ever really bothering me before, but this year I thought I might lose my mind.

  3. Ick!!! I am not a fan of wasps. I showed Doug the picture of the nest and asked him if he saw any of these when he mowed yesterday. (Yes, he mowed the weeds down because we have not mowed for about 4 weeks). He said no we don't have any of those nests. Keep up the good work Louie!!

  4. Those things are scary! My sister has a phobia about wasps - I'm sure glad she can't see them. :) blessings, marlene
